can a drop-down element be populated by an extra query string?

Is there a trick to using an extra query string to pre-select a drop-down list element? I have a menu item where I would like to add some parameters, but I seem to be having no luck getting the extra query string to populate the field. I have been able to use extra query strings for datajoin fields, but they are failing utterly for dropdowns. Ideally, I would like these fields hidden during, but I've tried making the fields public with no difference.

should do

You need to use the field as follows
&scandevice___modelid_raw=65
&yourfield___name_raw=1
or whatever the raw value is, then this works like a dream
