The history of Fabrik

Well with a new site, and a new name I thought it was time to offer a brief tour through the history of Fabrik and share some of my experiences about it.

Fabrik, under the guise of mosForms, was my first open source project and has been in development since 2004, being registered on mambo exchange on 2004-04-15 12:01.

mosForms was initially created to facilitate the need for a simple way to create forms within Mambo, and has since progressed to be one of the most flexible components available for Joomla today.

Now as Fabrik, we strive to provide non-coders the tools and resources to invent and create applications, which previously had not been possible unless you were an advanced developer. This democratisation of creation, from a state where those who had information withheld it from those without (think here pre-open source) to a state where information is freely shared is key to improving not only programs but the way we live and conduct ourselves in our lives.

Lets get down to facts - more details of which you can find on ohloh. There's some pretty amazing data here:

  • The coding of mosForms took one person year to do
  • 43,866 lines of code modified
  • 65000 downloads (total from mamboexchange and Joomla forge)
  • 26 % comment ratio
  • 502 Total forum topics
  • 1453 Total forum posts
  • It would have cost $351,134 to develop.

Whilst these figures are open to debate (I thought I had slightly more of a life than that!) I can say that I am passionate about this project, and look forward to making Fabrik the most empowering Joomla component ever created!

I've had great support from people throughout the project including:

  • Hugh Messenger (forum GOD!)
  • Graylan King
  • Robert Legros
  • Robert Wiklund
  • Manel Zaera
  • Mathius Wessensen
  • Ben Sheppard
  • Graham Spice
  • Anyone that's taken their time to help others on the forum.
  • and many many more that I can't recall right now !
