Email Reminder setup

What is the best practice for the above.
Currently I have two Form Email Plugins working fine with two of them emailing on submit confirming events and appointments up to 6 months in advance.
I would like to send an email reminder out once to each appointee with 10 days notice, before the event
The list name is Calendar with a date element known as calendar___startdate
This reminder email will basically be a copy of the current email, so the content is done.
What is the best way to achieve this goal, add some php coding to the Condition section of the email plugin, or setup a schedule?
I have very little php experience and if somebody can assist with an example or the code, that would be great.
Currently I already have the following statement in the form's email plugin Condition section
return '{calendar___noemail_raw}' == 1;
