ACL Strategy - users viewing only their data

Hi All,
Just joined as I have a couple of apps to build. Need advice on an overall strategy to build an efficient access to a catalog. we have the following situation:
1. We are a distributor of 2000 product items. In addition to the items we have currently about 20 "owners" or manufacturers of these items. One item has a single owner.
2. When the owner logs in Joomla and goes to the catalog I want the owner to only have access to list and edit their products. Some elements would only have read access and other items would give the user the ability to edit. So if we have 2000 items in the db and one owner had 200 items they would only see the 200 items.

What is the best and most efficient way to set this up?

Your catalog needs an element (column) to store the "owner's" Joomla userId (usually an element of type "user").
Then just add a list prefilter
where user(raw) equals {$my->id}

Element access (add, edit, details view (=readonly in form)) can be set in the element's settings.
