advanced search precludes certain operator options

If you have configured a certain element as a dropdown filter, and you use the advanced search, you cannot use certain operators (eg: begins with, contains, ends with) as the value is a dropdown list.

I had assumed the point of an advanced search is being able to search on finer detail on all elements, using all operator permutations available, irrespective of what the element filter has been set as.

well as things stand the filter type is applied to all filters, in the list or advanced search. It would be a massive re-write to alter that now I think.
