Script accessing Fabrik List vs. MySQL table

This is a bit exo-Fabrik but here it goes.
I have written a Joomla content plug in that I use to display content from a Fabrik record. To date, I've been embedding queries into my plug-in that reference the raw MySQL table instead of the Fabrik List. However, I'd like to be leverage the pre-filtering inherent in a Fabrik List so that my query is automatically limited in scope to the prefiltered keylist of the Fabrik List.

The question then is how do I query a Fabrik List in a content plug-in rather than referencing a MySQL table. I'm sure there has to be a way to expose the Fabrik model inside of the plug in. In fact, I suspect that if I look at the code for the list plug-in that allows for lists and/or forms to be inserted into Joomla articles that all I need to know is right there.

So, three questions:
1) Am I thinking about this correctly?
2) Is it true that a review of the plug-in code referenced above will give what I need to know? If so, what in your opinion would be the best/simplest example to look at?
3) Is there a easier way to leverage Fabrik Filtered Lists in external scripts?

Thanks,
