Changing the order of the columns when viewing data of a list

Hi all,

this is probably a newbie question, but my search didn't lead to a helpful result. I want to change the order the columns (i.e. elements) are shown in the list (i.e. List->View Data).
I found the possibility ("Please sort by order to enable reordering") to reorder the elements of a group by clicking the triangles/arrows and then moving the rows around (the rows become green and half-transparent).
However, this doesn't change the order of the elements in the list view. Is it necessary/possible to apply the new order so that it is used (I didn't find a "Save" button or something similar)? When I click the heading of an other column in the admin elements view (e.g. Name, Label or ID) and then click the "sort-column" (the 2 arrows directed up- and downwards) again, the order I created is gone. So apparently it has not been saved.

So what am I missing?
