difficulty with calc field in layout

If it's just for this one list and you don't have any other "<li>" elements: inside the calc.
If you want to overcome the mPDF issue in general:
Depending on your element type you can add an override.
e.g. for \plugins\fabrik_element\dropdown\layouts\fabrik-element-dropdown-list.php and replace <ul>s and <li>s with whatever you want to

Oh, sorry. This was something I played with locally.
Try to override components\com_fabrik\layouts\element\fabrik-element-elementlist-details.php (line 13)
