Database new connection issue

I've been trying to connect to another database on my VPS. But nothing I enter seems to work, i've tried many passwords, creating databases just for the purpose of trying to connect, but everything fails .

Any ideas or tips?

By chance do your users have access to the database.

Is the database server the same as the web server?

Yes the same server. I've tried both local host and the server IP

I do have some other connections to other web apps so confident the user passes are right. I've tried maybe a dozen combinations

I'm 100% confident in that code - I just tested adding / testing new connections on a Linux (Centos 6.5) and Windows 8.1 / XAMPP box, both worked fine. Never had any reports of issues with this.

So I'm pretty sure it's something site specific, with your server or MySQL setup.

Attention if playing around with multiple Fabrik connections, you have to know what you are doing.
Fabrik doesn't support joining across connections (e.g. a dbjoin pointing to a table with an other connection or joining tables...).
Don't touch the connection ID1, it should always be the Joomla DB.

If you are running DBs on an other server this (MySQL) server must allow external access.
