Does validation work differently on form's email plugin than on element plugins?

I tried to use a placeholder like this
return '{userdetails___premium}'== 1;

but it doesn't work.

Any idea?

Depends what element type it is. If it's (say) a dropdown, or join, etc with a concept of 'value' and 'label', you may need to append _raw to the element name.

Yup, yesno is just a special case of a radiobutton element, for convenience.
